Frequently Asked Questions
Where can I buy the required parts?
The main component is the Waveshare ESP32-S3-Touch-LCD-7 board, available directly from Waveshare's official store or through retailers like Allegro and Botland. The MAX3232 RS232 level shifter module can be found on electronics marketplaces such as Allegro, Botland, or your local electronics supplier. You will also need standard connectors and wiring appropriate for your vehicle installation.
What ECUs and CAN sources are supported?
ApexDuck works as a CAN bus and serial racing dashboard for a wide range of ECUs. It supports Ecumaster EMU Classic (via the EDL serial protocol), Ecumaster EMU Black (via CAN and serial), rusEFI, Zgrywus K8, Mazda RX-8 (with and without UDS), BMW E9x/E8x, and the BMW M57 DDE7 + 6HP swap over CAN. Because it reads standard CAN bus data, it can display live engine data from most CAN-enabled ECUs and engine swaps. See the full list at Supported ECUs.
Does ApexDuck support Ecumaster EMU Classic?
Yes, ApexDuck supports Ecumaster EMU Classic via the EDL serial protocol. The connection uses the Extension port and requires a MAX3232 converter.
Does ApexDuck support Ecumaster EMU Black?
Yes, ApexDuck supports Ecumaster EMU Black via CAN out of the box, with no extra adapter required. If you prefer to use the EDL serial protocol instead, only then do you need a MAX3232 converter connected to the TX/RX pins.
Does ApexDuck support rusEFI?
Yes, ApexDuck supports rusEFI via CAN.
Does ApexDuck support Zgrywus K8?
Yes, ApexDuck supports Zgrywus K8 via CAN.
Does ApexDuck support Mazda RX-8?
Yes, ApexDuck supports the Mazda RX-8 via CAN as a passive listener. A variant with periodic UDS polling adds battery voltage and barometric pressure.
Does ApexDuck support BMW E9x/E8x?
Yes, ApexDuck supports BMW E9x/E8x via CAN.
Does ApexDuck support the BMW M57 DDE7 6HP swap?
Yes, ApexDuck supports the BMW M57 DDE7 + 6HP swap via CAN (PT-CAN).
How to power the dash in the car
ApexDuck is powered via USB-C port, which can be connected to regular phone charger (it does not need PowerDelivery or QuickCharge - it can be a cheap charger :)
How do I assemble the hardware?
Assembly involves connecting the MAX3232 level shifter module to the Waveshare board's serial pins and wiring the RS232 output to your ECU's diagnostic port. The Waveshare board comes pre-assembled with the display attached. You will need to solder or use dupont connectors to link the level shifter. For detailed wiring diagrams and step-by-step instructions, please get in touch via the contact page.
How do I flash the firmware onto the board?
Currently this process involves sending board to us to be flashed with initial firmware. Please use contact us page and drop us a message.
What EMU parameters are available?
All EMU parameters that are streamed via the EDL Serial Protocol are available. See the full list in the EMU section on the Supported ECUs page.
How does dash know which gear I'm in?
Dash can take that information either from EMU, CAN or it can use gear calculation to figure out the gear based on Speed, RPM and provided gear ratios
How do I configure custom thresholds and alerts?
Thresholds are configurable via the ApexDuck Configuration website (https://configurator.apexduck.pl/). Note that alerts are evaluated only for parameters currently visible on the active dash page.
What threshold levels are available?
ApexDuck supports three different threshold levels: Cold Max (blue), Warn Min (yellow), Fail Min (red)
Why do AFR thresholds work differently from other thresholds?
AFR cannot be evaluated as an instant value. Certain conditions like throttle lift-off or gear shifts cause momentary AFR spikes that would trigger false alerts. Instead, AFR is evaluated within a 2-second time window — the dash only shows an alert if the threshold is continuously exceeded throughout that period.
How do I configure MAX_RPM and RPM_Channel for my setup?
Both values are configurable via the ApexDuck Configuration website. Set MAX_RPM to match your engine's redline and RPM_Channel to the correct EMU channel for your RPM source.
Can I change the dash layout or rearrange the tiles?
The dash layouts themselves are fixed — the number of tiles and their positions on each page cannot be moved or resized. However, every tile is fully assignable: using the ApexDuck Configuration website (https://configurator.apexduck.pl/) you can assign any available sensor or parameter to any tile, so you decide exactly what data each tile shows.
What are the dimmensions of the case?
3D printed case has dimmensions of 197x115x19 millimeters
